Dear PakWheelers, today we have a garage tour for you guys where we have these five exquisite Mercedes Benz cars. In this tour, we will walk you through their details, specifications, maintenance, and running costs.

Mercedes S-Class (280S)

Known as the first S-class ever made it was also the first car which came with four-wheel disc brakes and crumple zones throughout its body. There were two models in S-class. One was “S,” and the other was “E.” E stands for EFi whereas the “S” variant came with a carburetor. It was also the first vehicle to come with catalytic converter. Though the car we had under discussion was the simple petrol version although there were other versions with much bigger engine capacity. Unlike the EFi models, this carburetor model was very reliable. Since EFi was something new at the times, so things didn’t turn out to be that great. The owner is very satisfied with the reliability of this car and has taken it to many distant places for car shows. Spare parts are an issue; however, you can find them from international markets such as Dubai. This was also the first automatic transmission based Mercedes and buyers could also equip it with cruise control as well. This car also has a Hydromatic suspension system which is a combination of air and hydraulic suspension system. Additionally, as a safety measure, Mercedes developed the interior of this car in such a way that in case of an accident, the interior won’t get pushed onto the passengers.
The owner didn’t share any fuel economy figures; however, he was quick to mention that the performance and comfort of this machine are better than most cars on the road today. And claims that everything in this car is in working condition, which is a huge plus in german vehicles.

Mercedes E-Class W124 (Station Wagon)

The E-Class W124 Station Wagons are a very rare breed to spot in Pakistan. The owner claims that there might only be three or four of them in the whole country, which we reckon is quite true. This is the 300TE version with a 3.0L in-line six engine. This car was the first generation of E class, and it’s also one of the most successful Mercedes Benz models in history with 2.5 million units sold worldwide. Let’s admire Mercedes for making it the safest most reliable car of its times. As standard, it came with dual airbags and ABS system as well. While the body is made of high tensile steel which is the same standard which Mercedes follows till this date. Moving on to the interior side of things there’s digital seat belt reminder for the passengers as well as the drive, child locks, electronic left side mirror, cruise control, and impact-absorbing interior. When the crash tests of this car were conducted, the results turned out to be very good as passengers stayed safe in crashes up to 60km/h. This specific version also comes with 7-seats, which could also be folded flat with the floor in favor of extra luggage space. Additionally, the owner showed us that this W124 also comes with a spare wheel and a medical kit a welcome feature for going on longer journeys.

Mercedes S-class (W140)

The 3rd car of this garage is S-Class (W140) which stayed in production from 1991 to 1999. This machine comes with a 3.2-liter inline-six engine. This vehicle features unique double glass windows which help in soundproofing and adds strength to the car doors. Additionally, amenities like electric and memory seats, heated side mirrors and parking sensors were extremely rare in the luxury cars of the times, and this car even has those. From the safety front, the car has dual airbags, ABS, traction control to aid the driver. Along with that, the car had auto rain-sensing vipers. The owner pointed out another great thing about this car which was that it came with so many options to choose from and engine configuration to suit your needs. This includes option ranging from a V6 to W12 engine. This car was widely used for presidents around the world, so that’s why Mercedes has to put stronger engine options as well. For passengers comfort the W140 has a sunroof and dual climate control. Owners say despite being the base model, this car is highly equipped. This statement was further strengthened by the fact that the car features an electronic boot for the first time ever. Clearly, this car is a lot bigger than its predecessor in both length and width, although this car under consideration is the normal wheelbase version and not the long-wheelbase version. Put it simply the S-Class was basically an overengineered piece of metal on four wheels and had features which we see on luxury cars of today.

Mercedes E-Class CGI (E250)

Moving onto the most recent models, and for that, we have here is an E250 CGI. This is a 1.8L variant which comes with a Turbocharger due to which it has an improved fuel economy over the other cars in the list. Whereas speed and horsepower remain the same as compared to other higher displacement engine cars in the list according to the owner. Mercedes claims that this car can do around 13 to 14 kilometers per liter. Owner says the problem with these E-Class models is the fact they only run on high octane petrol. For which he recommends shell V power only.

This model has an all-new design in terms of exterior and interior and helped Mercedes gain back its trust after the previous two generations not being good enough. Coming to the interior, the first thing you notice is a new design which gives a very executive class feel. It also treats the owner with luxuries like blind monitoring assist, parking sensors, night vision, lane keep assistant, and automatic braking. These models are extremely reliable and highly modern. Parts availability once again is an issue, but yes they are available at a higher price in Pakistan. Throughout the ownership, the owner only had to replace a battery and a hosepipe of the car other than that everything still works fine even after almost ten years. Another apparent thing about this car is that it has many airbags, including the side airbags for passengers as well. This vehicle has a Tiptronic gearbox with manual shifters which gives it a very sporty nature.

Mercedes S-class (S320)

The final car of this garage is the S-Class S-320 CDI diesel car which once again is rare in Pakistan. Right off the bat owner told us that diesel versions of this car face a nozzle choking issue due to high presence of carbon in our diesel fuel however he hasn’t yet faced this issue personally. With that aside, S32o comes fitted with a 3.0L inline V6 Bi-Turbo engine which is also the base engine. This is a 2008 model which got a facelift in 2011 stated the owner. It has Airmatic shocks which are a variant of Mercedes air suspension. Airmatic provides auto-leveling and cornering stability to this car.

Moving on the interior, there is there isn’t a single piece of plastic in the interior of this card, everything is made out of leather or metal or wood. This car also comes with all the features we’ve discussed in the E-Class such as

  • Night vision
  • Auto parking sensors
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind for monitoring
  • Front, Rear and Side airbags (9 Total)
  • Radar cruise control
  • Radar braking system
  • Tyre pressure monitoring
  • Speed-sensing steering wheel
  • Suspension raise controls

The rear seats are made up of complete leather. Moreover, the other comfort features at the rear are; side air conditioning vents along with two 12-volts charging sockets, vanity mirror with lights for each passenger along with reading lights as seen in airplanes.

On the maintenance side of things, the owner claims that these cars are a little harder to maintain since their parts are much more expensive than E-Class and C-Class, plus their parts availability and labor cost is also an issue. These cars are not designed to be used for daily trips but for special occasions only as they are expensive to maintain.
